The guest that Banyan Tree Samui is for has usually already stayed somewhere more famous and found, in the gap between expectation and reality, that fame and quality are not the same variable. They have decided, perhaps consciously and perhaps by process of elimination, that what they want is not more — not more pools, more restaurants, more activity options, more of everything that a large resort uses to justify its rate. They want less, but better. A private bay. A villa high on a hillside above it. A spa that takes their body seriously. Food that tastes of where they are. The particular silence of a property that has found its identity and stopped expanding it. Banyan Tree Samui is for this guest, and it is very good at being for them.

The Property

Eighty-eight all-pool villas on a hillside above Lamai Bay on Koh Samui’s southeast coast. The villas are built on traditional Thai stilts four metres above the ground, with roof spires and finials drawn from southern Thai temple architecture — the design pays its homage to the island’s cultural context in a way that feels specific rather than decorative. They cascade down the terraced hillside in sections, each with its own private infinity pool and the Gulf of Thailand as the permanent backdrop. The buggy system that moves guests between the upper villa sections and the beach below is efficient; recent guests report short wait times. The sixty-seven-villa scale creates an intimacy that the property uses deliberately — by the second morning, the staff know your name and your breakfast order, and they treat the knowledge as a foundation rather than a performance.

One structural note that belongs at the front rather than in the footnotes: Banyan Tree Samui explicitly does not recommend itself for families with children under twelve. The hillside architecture — steep paths, elevated villas, the drop from the deck to the terraces below — creates genuine safety considerations for very young children, and parents are required to sign a liability waiver. In practice this functions as a de facto adults-oriented property, and it shapes the atmosphere accordingly: quieter, more inward, more focused on couples and on the pleasures that require stillness rather than animation. What the Packages Cover — and What They Do Not

The standard villa rate includes daily buffet breakfast for two at The Edge, complimentary Wi-Fi, daily recreation activities, and non-motorised marine activities — kayaking, snorkelling equipment, access to the private bay’s water sports. The base rate is breakfast-inclusive. More comprehensive packages — available through Luxury Escapes and periodically through direct booking — add nightly dinners, a cocktail hour, and occasionally spa inclusions, approaching a genuine all-inclusive structure from the outside in. Dining inclusions in most packages cover food only; beverages at dinner are separately charged unless the package explicitly states otherwise. Confirm this distinction before booking — it is the detail that produces the most common post-arrival surprise.

Spa treatments are not included in the base rate. The Rainforest hydrotherapy experience, which is the spa’s most significant offering, carries its own fee but is frequently incorporated into package add-ons and should be budgeted for regardless — see below. Airport transfers at THB 2,500 per vehicle per way; not included.

The Restaurants

Five dining venues. Saffron is the Thai fine dining restaurant that defines the property’s culinary identity — inspired by Bangkok’s Yaowarat district medicine shops, with ornate metal lanterns and a menu that treats Thai cuisine as a tradition worth honouring rather than a format to be made accessible. The tom kha gai is prepared with a coconut broth that has simmered rather than been assembled; the signature cocktails are built around the same botanical intelligence that runs through the food. The Tuesday evening Thai dance performance gives the restaurant a theatrical dimension that the food alone does not require but that adds something genuine. Beachside — lanterns strung in the trees, waves at the edge of the terrace, the Gulf beyond — is the resort’s most atmospheric dinner option: the setting does its own emotional work and the kitchen does not need to overperform to complete the experience. The Edge handles breakfast and international cuisine; the Pool Bar provides the daytime casual option.

The Spa: The Rainforest

The Rainforest is what guests come to Banyan Tree Samui specifically to experience, and it justifies the specificity. A hydrotherapy circuit of nine stations built around the therapeutic principle of temperature contrast: steam room, sauna, tepidarium, a bucket shower of cold water, an ice room, herbal baths, and a hydrotherapy pool for full-body massage. The progression takes forty-five minutes to an hour and produces a specific physical result — the clarity and ease that follows sustained contrast therapy — that standard massage cannot replicate and that stays with the body for the remainder of the day. All spa therapists train at the Banyan Tree Spa and Wellness Academy in Phuket, and the consistency of technique across a property with this level of treatment volume is the operational achievement that guest reviews most consistently note with specific surprise. The oceanfront treatment villas outside The Rainforest provide the standard massage and facial programme at the same quality level.

The Beach

Private, calm, Lamai Bay. The beach is modest in length rather than a long sweeping shore, but the enclosed nature of the private cove creates a quality of seclusion that a longer, more accessible beach cannot match — it is yours, in a way that even a resort’s best stretch of Grace Bay or the Platinum Coast is not quite yours. The 50-metre pool overlooking the beachfront lawn provides the lap-swimming option when the bay is not calm enough for open water. Note from recent guests: the seafloor in certain sections can be rocky following storm activity — water shoes are available from the resort and are a sensible precaution rather than an inconvenience.

Who This Resort Is For — and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Banyan Tree Samui is for the couple or honeymooner who wants a private bay, a villa with a pool that faces the Gulf, a spa that treats the body with genuine seriousness, and a restaurant that takes Thai cuisine at its word. It is for guests who find that restraint is a form of luxury — that a resort which has decided what it is and operates that identity with conviction is more valuable than one that attempts to provide everything and achieves mediocrity at scale.

   

Families with children under twelve should look elsewhere, not as a moral judgement but as a reflection of the resort’s explicit position and the physical reality of the hillside architecture. Guests who want the widest and most famous beach on Koh Samui, a large pool bar with significant footfall, or a flat all-inclusive rate requiring no pre-booking calculation, will find other Koh Samui properties more straightforwardly suited to those goals. The Four Seasons’ northwest position offers a finer beach with the same all-villa standard; Six Senses offers the deeper wellness programme with a smaller, younger-feeling operation. Banyan Tree sits between and to the side of both — not better in every dimension, but more completely itself, which for the right guest is precisely sufficient.
