Kandima Maldives: What They Don’t Tell You About the All-Inclusive — and Why You Might Not Care
Kandima is three kilometres long, has 266 rooms, a water park, a resident artist, a DJ, and an energy that one guest described as Ibiza in the Indian Ocean. Whether that sentence makes you lean forward or push back will tell you immediately whether to keep reading.
The Maldives is imagined, by almost everyone who dreams of going, as a quiet thing. Two people, an overwater villa, the sound of water moving under the deck. Kandima Maldives exists in deliberate and unapologetic contradiction to that image. The resort’s philosophy — rooted in its parent brand Pulse Hotels — is built around the words playful, rooted, and human, and the marketing is more honest than most: this is not a sanctuary of reverential silence. It is a lifestyle destination at scale, and at scale it does things that smaller, quieter resorts simply cannot do. The question is whether the things it does are the things you came for.
Getting there requires a 40-minute seaplane from Malé to the Dhaalu Atoll, or a domestic flight followed by a short speedboat. The journey is longer than South Malé resorts and the transfer costs stack accordingly. One guest who paid close to $1,000 per night for an overwater villa arrived at 9pm, was not met or escorted to their room, and found their way alone in the dark with no guidance from the check-in team. It is a specific complaint but a recurring category of complaint at Kandima — the resort delivers well at its best and inconsistently at its worst, and the gap between those two states is wider than the price point justifies.
The All-Inclusive Plan: Read This Before You Book
The most important research you can do before booking Kandima is to read the specific all-inclusive tier you are purchasing, carefully, in full, before you confirm. The Dine Around All-Inclusive — the tier that many guests book under the assumption that it functions like a standard all-inclusive plan — operates within fixed meal windows. Breakfast runs 7am to 10:30am. Lunch runs 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Dinner opens at 7pm. Outside those windows, food costs extra. Ice cream costs extra. Snacks cost extra. Milkshakes cost extra. One honeymooning couple discovered mid-stay that upgrading to the Platinum all-inclusive tier, which removes the restrictions, would cost an additional £400 for their remaining days. The resort is aware this creates friction. The review record on this point is consistent enough across enough guests over enough time to be considered a structural feature of the product rather than a series of individual misunderstandings.
Some specialty restaurants carry surcharges even under the higher plan — Sea Dragon, the Chinese restaurant, is specifically named in reviews. Sparkling water is not included at most outlets. Bicycles, which you might reasonably expect to be complimentary on a three-kilometre island where a bicycle is a practical necessity rather than a leisure activity, are a chargeable extra. US dollar notes printed before 2009 are reportedly not accepted, a policy communicated poorly enough that it surprises guests at the point of payment.
The Platinum plan, or the highest available tier at your time of booking, is what the resort is genuinely designed around. Book it, know what you’re buying, and the experience becomes dramatically more relaxed. Book a lower tier expecting equivalence and you will spend the week making micro-decisions about food and drink costs that a resort of this calibre and price should have removed from your holiday entirely.
What Three Kilometres of Island Actually Gives You
Once the all-inclusive question is resolved in your favour, the case for Kandima opens up considerably. The island is immaculate — two miles of white powder sand on both sides, so fine and so white that walking it in the hour before sunset produces the specific kind of visual overload that makes people reach for their phone and then put it down again because no photograph is going to do this any justice. The Ocean Pool Villas are the property’s peak: overwater structures with private infinity pools extending directly above the lagoon, unobstructed horizon in every direction, direct steps to the sea from the deck. Waking in one of these villas to a morning that belongs entirely to you is as close to the Maldivian archetype as most travellers will ever get, and Kandima delivers it at a price below the ultra-luxury tier that charges the same experience at twice the rate.
The Aquaholics watersports centre is one of the most comprehensive in the Maldives — parasailing, wakeboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding, jet ski, windsurfing, and a full diving programme running from a single well-organised hub. The kids’ club is consistently praised. The water park is a genuine differentiator for families with children who would otherwise spend a week managing the gap between what the Maldives offers adults and what it offers eight-year-olds. Nightly entertainment, a resident artist, dawn yoga on the beach, and a social energy that means solo travellers fall into a rhythm without effort — these are not incidental features. They are the product that Kandima is actually selling.
The marine life is a more complicated picture. There is no meaningful house reef. The seabed visible from the beach involves dead coral at certain points, and snorkelling directly off the sand delivers less than the photography on the booking page implies. The resort runs daily boat excursions to better snorkelling sites, and guests who went report dolphins, reef sharks, turtles, and in lucky encounters whale sharks. But you are booking Kandima for its island life, not its underwater life. The distinction matters, and making it clearly before you book prevents a specific category of disappointment that surfaces in reviews from guests who arrived expecting both.
The Service Honest Assessment
The Krew culture at Kandima — the resort’s name for its staff — is genuine and visible. The team is internationally diverse, conspicuously enthusiastic, and produces specific individual praise in the review record with a frequency that reflects real staff culture rather than scripted hospitality. The best service interactions at Kandima are exceptional. A couple returning for a second stay came back specifically for a private boat hire that surrounded them with dolphins, turtles, reef sharks, and more concentrated marine life than they had encountered anywhere else. That is also Kandima.
The distance between the best and the routine, however, is wider than a resort at this price should allow. A solo dinner guest waiting 45 minutes for mains at a near-empty restaurant. Pool pump noise from filtration systems audible from 8am in some overwater villas. Cleanliness issues noted beneath furniture in some rooms. These are not catastrophic complaints. They are the texture of a large, busy resort that has not yet achieved the consistency that 266 rooms at premium pricing demands. At its best, Kandima earns its rates and then some. On a difficult day, the gap between what you paid and what you received is perceptible in ways that smaller, more focused resorts rarely allow.
