One&Only Reethi Rah Review: The Maldives at Scale

Reethi Rah is the largest private island in the North Malé Atoll — five and a half kilometres of beach perimeter, one hundred and one villas and residences arranged across a landmass so significantly larger than the typical Maldivian resort island that the experience of being here is specifically different from the experience of being at a property where the island’s total length is a ten-minute walk. The bicycle that the resort provides for guests is not a gesture toward the active holiday or a suggestion that the island might be explored — it is a practical necessity for reaching the beach in a time frame that the walk would not accommodate before the breakfast service ends. This scale is the One&Only Reethi Rah’s defining characteristic and the factor whose implications — positive and challenging — run through every aspect of the stay.

The positive: the beach variety that five and a half kilometres of perimeter provides across the island’s different aspects — the sheltered western lagoon side whose calm water and shallow sand flats produce the turquoise that the Maldivian photograph requires, the northern tip’s windward exposure where the Indian Ocean swell wraps around the island in the conditions that the kitesurfers use, and the eastern shore’s deep water access where the house reef’s wall begins at swimmable depth from the beach. No single-island Maldivian property offers this beach range. The island’s size is the reason.

The Villas

One hundred and one beach and water villas across the island’s perimeter — the beach villas on the sand at the lagoon’s edge, the water villas on the jetty systems extending over the lagoon on the island’s sheltered western side. The One&Only design standard is applied consistently across both categories: generous dimensions, quality materials, the private pool on the terrace, and the connection to the water that each villa’s position provides in its specific form — the beach villa’s path to the sand, the water villa’s steps from the deck into the lagoon.

The water villas are positioned on the lagoon’s western face — the most sheltered section of the island’s perimeter, where the Indian Ocean’s swell reaches the lagoon floor rather than the ocean surface, and the water’s colour in the late afternoon when the sun is behind the island and the reflected light is bouncing upward from the sand below reaches the specific turquoise saturation that the Maldivian holiday is organised around. The villa deck at this time, above this water, with the sun’s position producing the light from below rather than the glare from above, is the Maldivian afternoon at its most specifically beautiful.

The Spa Island

The One&Only Spa at Reethi Rah occupies a small adjacent island connected to the main island by a bridge — the treatment rooms set in the vegetation of a separate landmass, the water visible from the treatment tables, the soundscape the Indian Ocean’s ambient rather than the resort’s ambient. The separation of the spa island from the main island is a design decision whose practical effect is complete: guests arrive at the spa island by bridge and leave by bridge, and the interval between is conducted in an environment that is specifically separate from the pool, the beach, the restaurants, and the operational activity that the main island’s scale accommodates. This is the correct design for a spa whose purpose requires the specific quality of separation from everything else.

The Food Programme

Four restaurants across the island — the Reethi restaurant’s international and Maldivian menu for the main dining, the Tapasake’s Japanese-inspired format above the lagoon for the evening’s most dramatic dining position, the Fanditha bar’s Maldivian cultural cooking for the guests who want the island’s own culinary tradition rather than the international hotel menu, and the beach dining arrangements that the concierge manages for the private dinner on the sandbank or the overwater platform at sunset. The resort’s scale justifies the four-restaurant format; the single-restaurant constraint of the smaller Maldivian properties, however intimate, limits the variety that a week-long stay without off-island dining options requires.

The Honest Note on Accessibility

Reethi Rah is in the North Malé Atoll — fifty minutes from Velana International Airport by speedboat, which is at the far edge of the speedboat transfer range without tipping into the seaplane requirement that the outer atolls impose. The fifty-minute crossing at the speed that the resort’s transfer vessels maintain is a smooth, open-ocean transfer in calm conditions and a rougher crossing in the swell conditions that the southwest monsoon produces between May and November. The crossing at night — for the late international arrival — is conducted in the dark above a sea whose specific quality in darkness is either atmospheric or uncomfortable depending on the guest’s relationship to open water in the absence of visible horizon. The morning arrival is preferable for guests whose first Maldivian crossing experience this is.

Practical Details

101 villas and residences. Room-only and full-board rates. Speedboat from Velana International Airport approximately 50 minutes. Rates from approximately $1,500-$2,000 per night for beach villas. The bicycle is genuinely necessary for the larger beach villa categories — confirm at check-in that the allocated villa is within walking distance of the main facilities or that the bicycle is available at the villa.
