Round Hill Hotel and Villas Review: The Most Historically Significant Hotel in the Caribbean

Round Hill opened in 1953 with a founding membership that Noël Coward helped assemble, and the list — Grace Kelly, Oscar Hammerstein II, Alfred Hitchcock, William F. Buckley Jr. — reads less like a hotel guest register than like the cast list of mid-twentieth century cultural ambition. John Pringle, the Jamaican-born businessman who conceived it, understood something that the hotel industry is still working out: that the most desirable hospitality is not the most comprehensive but the most specific, and that a private estate on a Jamaican bay, run with genuine Jamaican warmth rather than imported hotel formality, would produce loyalty of a kind that the international chain hotels, for all their consistency, cannot generate. The families who have been coming to Round Hill since the 1960s are still coming. Their children are bringing their children.

Round Hill is not all-inclusive. It has never been all-inclusive. The Ralph Lauren-designed main house rooms and the twenty-seven privately owned villas — each one different from every other, available when the owner is not in residence — operate on room-only and half-board terms in the Caribbean tradition of a hotel that assumes its guests have come for the island as much as for the property. The beach, the pool, the watersports, and the restaurant are present and excellent. The flat-rate all-inclusive programme is not, and the guest who requires it should book elsewhere without resentment — the alternative is a resort that has been making a specific choice about what it is for seven decades, and the choice is correct.

The Ralph Lauren Rooms

Ralph Lauren has been a Round Hill guest since the 1970s and redesigned the main house rooms in the early 2000s in the specific idiom of his design vocabulary: the crisp white linen, the natural materials, the Caribbean colour palette of sand and sea and the faded patina of a place that has been lived in properly. The rooms are beautiful in the way that confident simplicity is beautiful — no excess, no decoration for its own sake, the view given the prominence it deserves. The best rooms face the bay directly. Request a bay-facing room at booking.

The Villas

The twenty-seven villas are the most distinctive accommodation at Round Hill and the most variable. The oldest were built by the original membership in the 1950s and retain the architecture of that moment — low-slung, Caribbean, designed for cross-ventilation rather than air conditioning, with the specific character of a building that grew from the hillside rather than being placed on it. The more recently renovated villas have been updated to contemporary standards while retaining the hillside setting and the bay views. At booking, request information about the specific villa being offered — the variation between the oldest unrenovated and the most recently refreshed is significant and worth understanding before arrival.

The Beach and Bay

The beach at Round Hill is private — a crescent of white sand below the villas and the main house, facing the bay that gives the property its name. The water is calm, the reef accessible by the resort’s snorkelling equipment, and the sunset from the beach on the west-facing bay is the specific Jamaican west coast sunset that Negril’s more famous version also provides, here without the Negril crowd. The beach restaurant serves lunch daily and the Wednesday beach barbecue is the most sociable event of the resort’s weekly calendar.

The Honest Criticism

Round Hill’s villas are privately owned and their quality is inconsistent — the owner’s maintenance standards vary, and the hotel cannot control the individual villa’s condition in the way that a purpose-built hotel room can be standardised. The honest approach is to ask specifically about the villa being offered, its last renovation, and its condition at the time of booking. The main house Ralph Lauren rooms are consistent; the villas are not, and the price premium they command is justified only by the specific villa being booked rather than the category in the abstract.

Practical Details

Main house rooms and villas available. Room-only and half-board rates. Rates from approximately $500 per night for main house rooms, significantly higher for villas. Sangster International Airport Montego Bay is 20 minutes east. The beach restaurant, the watersports, and the pool are all included in the room rate.
