Soneva Jani Review: The Roof That Opens
The water villa at Soneva Jani has a retractable roof above the bedroom. This is the fact that distinguishes it from every other water villa in the Maldives and that the resort’s marketing deploys as the primary image — the bed below the opening roof, the stars visible through the gap, the Indian Ocean horizon in the window beyond. The photograph is accurate. The roof opens. The stars are above. What the photograph does not convey is the specific quality of the moment when the roof retracts in the evening — the room temperature shifting, the sound of the lagoon entering the space that the closed roof had been filtering, the Noonu Atoll’s specific dark sky arriving overhead as the mechanical movement concludes and the ceiling is the sky — which is the experience that the engineering of the retractable roof was designed to produce and that the engineering delivers with the completeness that a good design decision delivers when the execution is correct.
Soneva Jani opened in 2016 — twenty-one years after Soneva Fushi established the brand in the Baa Atoll — on a private lagoon in the Noonu Atoll, one hundred and fifty kilometres north of the capital Malé and forty minutes from the Maafaru International Airport that the Noonu Atoll’s development required to be built to serve it. The island is private in the complete sense: the resort occupies the entire landmass, the lagoon surrounds it, and the specific isolation of the northern atolls from the more developed central Maldivian resort corridor produces the environmental quality — the reef health, the fish density, the specific clarity of water that less boat traffic and less development generates — that the brand’s philosophy requires as the context for the experience it builds around it.
The Water Villas
The water villas at Soneva Jani are the most inventive overwater accommodation in the Maldives and among the most inventive in the Indian Ocean. The retractable roof is the headline feature, but the waterslide from the upper deck of the two-level villas directly into the lagoon is the feature that most guests describe as the specific pleasure they did not anticipate. A waterslide from the villa into the Indian Ocean — not the pool, not a constructed water feature, but the lagoon itself — is the kind of amenity that adult guests approach with the specific combination of mild embarrassment and genuine delight that well-designed childlike pleasure produces in people who have not given themselves permission to feel it recently. The embarrassment resolves within the first two uses. The delight remains for the week.
The two-bedroom water villa configuration — the master bedroom above with the retractable roof and the waterslide access, the second bedroom below with its own deck at water level — provides the specific arrangement that a family or two couples travelling together requires: the privacy of separate sleeping levels within the same villa structure, the shared deck and the shared lagoon access, and the communal cooking facilities that the villa’s equipped kitchen provides for the afternoon fresh-fish preparation that the resort’s daily market stocks.
The Noonu Atoll’s Lagoon
The lagoon at Soneva Jani is one of the Maldives’ finest private lagoons — the enclosed water inside the atoll’s reef rim, protected from the Indian Ocean’s swell by the reef’s barrier, producing the specific calm and the specific colour that the Maldivian lagoon experience is built around. The snorkelling from the villa deck accesses the house reef at the lagoon’s edge, where the coral communities have been developing without the anchor damage and the snorkeller pressure that the more accessible atolls’ more visited reefs receive. The manta ray excursions to the Noonu Atoll’s cleaning stations — where the mantas arrive in the morning for the reef fish’s cleaning service and hold position long enough for the snorkeller above to observe the process in the specific way that the manta’s comfort with human presence at this atoll’s less-visited cleaning stations allows — are bookable through the resort’s marine programme.
The All-Inclusive Structure
Soneva Jani, like its Baa Atoll sibling Soneva Fushi, operates on the fully all-inclusive basis that the Soneva brand established in 1995: meals, beverages including the wine programme, excursions, water sports, and the resort’s experience programme all covered in the nightly rate. The cinema under the stars — the outdoor cinema on the island’s sandbank, the film projected onto the screen above the lagoon, the seating on the sand — is one of several included experiences that the brand uses to create the specific memory of a week that was more than the sum of its beach chairs. The sandbank dinner, the island-hopping excursion, and the resident sommelier’s wine tasting on the villa deck are each included and each specific rather than generic in the quality of their delivery.
The Honest Note on Transfer
The Noonu Atoll requires a domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Maafaru Airport — forty minutes — followed by a speedboat transfer of approximately fifteen minutes to the island. The domestic flight schedule may not align with late international arrivals into Velana; the seaplane alternative is available at a higher transfer cost and requires daylight operations. Most guests arriving on evening international flights to Malé spend the night in Malé or at the airport hotel before the morning domestic connection. This is worth planning for at the booking stage rather than discovering at the airport.
Practical Details
51 water villas and island villas. All-inclusive. Domestic flight to Maafaru Airport approximately 40 minutes; speedboat to resort approximately 15 minutes.
