The Hunter Valley has been around almost as long as Australia itself. It was one of the first areas settled after the Sydney area became a little too crowded. A good thing too as the area almost single-handedly saved the new colony from starving and quickly became the food bowl.

Not too long after wine began to gain preference. While there is also mining in the area it is really the wineries which have operated for hundreds of years now. This gives the Hunter it's distinct charm an identity. 

You can easily divide the Hunter again into the Lower Hunter, around Cessnock and Pokolbin which has 110 wineries and with great Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and the upper which is up towards the mountainous areas and has larger wineries.
